Freelance Career Ideas: Writing, Webdesign & More

The following article was promoted from the forums. It was written by Miranda Marquit, who writes for numerous personal finance web sites, including Credit Score Blog.

The most recent recession has been marked by an increase of people starting home businesses. The combination of a tough job market and technology that makes it possible to start a freelance business from home has tempted many to quit the more traditional workplace and work for themselves. If you have a specific skill, you can sell it to others. And, because a freelancer doesn’t cost the company in benefits and overhead, it is possible that you will be more attractive than an in-house employee. Here are 4 freelance career ideas that can provide you with the opportunity to set your own hours:

1. Freelance Writing

This is one of the most obvious freelance career choices. If you have a reasonable command of the English language, and you can express yourself well, freelance writing might be a viable work-from-home job. Gone are the days when freelance writing meant sending pitch letter after pitch letter to magazines (although you can still do that, of course). These days, you can make a living providing content online.

Depending on length and time involved for research, as well as your experience and level of skill, you can command anywhere between $5 and more than $100 an article. Website owners are looking for writers to provide regular content for their sites. Even magazines and newspapers are looking for additional online content. Companies are looking for writers to create content for web pages, social media profiles, marketing materials and blogs. Public relations firms look for ad copy, press releases and marketing materials. Places like Elance or Odesk have thousands of different job openings available for freelance writers. If you are not in a rush for receiving compensation and know how to do keyword research, there is some money to be made writing at Hubpages and Squidoo. If you are willing to build a good portfolio and reputation, it is possible to find success as a freelance writer.

2. Graphic Designer

Another job that can be done from the comfort of your home is graphic designer. Freelance graphic designers can make up to $125 an hour or more (although many charge between $45 and $65). In order to be a graphic designer, you need to have a good idea of how to use space. You should also know how to use various graphic design programs. The better you are, and the more attractive your work, the more you are justified in charging.

Graphic designers can be used as part of web development projects, as well as for advertising and marketing, and even for layouts for newsletters and other printed material. Graphic designers can aid in developing presentations as well.

3. Web Developer

If you are handy with the different languages used in web development, and you have a good sense of usability and design, you can be a freelance web developer or web designer. You can provide your services to companies and bloggers alike. There are plenty of companies that need help setting up web sites, and even redesigning their old web sites. Many web developers charge between $25 and $50 an hour for their services, but a good freelancer can sometimes make as much as $100 or more, depending on what services you offer, and your knowledge of different platforms and languages.

Another freelance job that is worth looking into is that of software developer. Some companies outsource their software development needs to freelancers. If you can combine web development and software development skills, you could have a successful freelance career.

4. Freelance Photography

You can be a freelance photographer, taking pictures of weddings, graduations and other important events. You can also hire out your services for child portraiture and family portraits. Depending on your skill level, you could earn $30-$50 an hour or more. If you have abilities with PhotoShop and a digital camera, you can provide touch up services on top of your photography.

But you don’t have to be a freelance photographer taking pictures of others on demand. You can also earn money as a freelancer selling photos. You can provide stock images to companies , or you can earn money through web sites (like Shutterstock.com123RF.com,Dreamstime.comCreStock.comFotolia.com.) that offer stock images for use online. You are paid for your work each time it is used by someone. You can take pictures of landscapes, or create creative photos and photo illustrations that others can pay to use. This can provide a decent source of residual income if your photos are popular enough.

There are plenty of other ideas for freelance ideas from home. What ideas do you have?
