Editing your novel

First of all I’d like to just say, there is no substitute for professional editing. There’s a unique insight and focus that an editor brings to a manuscript that very few writers can bring on their own, and therefore I highly recommend hiring an editor.

Whether you take my recommendation or not, you are going to need to get the manuscript into shape before you move on. In order to do this effectively, you will need to focus on editing. Which means you should be finished with the main writing process; world building, character development, story structure etc…

Once you are in editing mode, you will need to decide how you will proceed. There are two schools of thought on method.

1st – you can go through the manuscript thoroughly, catching anything you can find and correcting it all as you go.

2nd – pick one focused area like ‘POV,’ and make corrections throughout the manuscript only pertaining to it. Then you go back through it with another focused area like grammar, and keep going until you make it through your whole list of editing areas.

There are pros and cons to each method, and really it just comes down to a matter of personal preference. The bottom line should be a finely tuned manuscript that you can hand off to an editor, or head straight to publishing.
