A Post About Actual Writing
Since this blog is titled, MommyWriterHood, I guess I should sometimes actually write about my writing, right? (Read that last phrase three times fast.) But the news that I’ve written about in the past hasn’t changed too much. I’ve had a lot of form rejection letters and a couple of nibbles. My manuscript is still out there in literary agent cyberspace, hoping someone will pull it down and claim it.
For the most part, a couple of agents have said that my newest draft is written well enough, but the plot is just so far out there, they don’t know what publisher to send it to. What? A girl with cold, blue skin who becomes the leader of the Native American Kushtaka while falling in love with a boy that turns into a moose isn’t believable enough for them? Geez! (Maybe I should refer them to most Stephen King works.) I’m no Stephen King, by a long shot, but I’m just sayin’.
Well, just in case that is the reason why my book isn’t being picked up, the second book I’ve been working on (for the better part of a year) is a lot more toned-down. It doesn’t have any Sci-fi characteristics to it at all. It’s about a girl with a flair for gymnastics that falls in love with a Somali pirate (the same one that is keeping her father captive). The plot is a little bit easier to chew on than the first, don’t you think?
I’ve been doing a pretty good job sticking to my actual quota (750 words a day) but sometimes if I don’t get it in, I double or triple up the days after. There’s where life gets a little sticky. My back begins to hurt and my brain slows to a freeze and I forget which book I’m writing in and the pirate ends up kissing the Native American cold-skinned girl or something.
So, yes. I am still writing my book, not just this blog. I usually only do this in the mornings to get my brain churning over my morning coffee. Oh, don’t get me started on that. Maybe that is the problem. I didn’t have any coffee this morning so my brain is still parked in standby.
If you look into the left column of this blog, you will see what I’m reading lately. Sometimes it’ll take me a week to get through a book, sometimes a month…or longer. The book I’m reading now, Hex Hall, is an easy, fun read so I’m nearly ready to move on to a new book. Usually I’m prone to pick up the newest YA Sci-fi/fantasy book, but I need a break. I need a recommendation of a light and fun adult book. Nothing too heavy. No non-fiction (unless you really love love love it).
Hopefully this will get some of my blog page lurkers (yes, I mean YOU, person who is not my sister) to comment on my posts instead of just read them. I have A LOT more readers than my sister. I keep tabs on my traffic.
So, thanks for reading, but I would love a comment. Or a new follower!
